What is Proofpoint?
Proofpoint is a human-centric security company built around a simple observation: attackers do not target infrastructure at random, they target specific people. The platform is organised around identifying who in your organisation is actually being attacked, then protecting those people across email, collaboration tools and the data they handle.
The portfolio changed shape considerably over the last two years. What used to be sold as separate products, notably Targeted Attack Protection and Threat Response Auto-Pull, has been consolidated into Core Email Protection, which can now be deployed either as a classic secure email gateway or through an API-based model that avoids MX record changes. The Tessian acquisition added behavioural AI that surfaces today as Adaptive Email DLP, and the Hornetsecurity acquisition completed in December 2025 produced 365 Total Protection, which replaced Proofpoint Essentials for the SMB and MSP market.
Underneath sits Nexus, the detection stack. It is not a single model but an ensemble: a language model for intent, a relationship graph for sender behaviour, computer vision for image and QR-code based attacks, and threat intelligence drawn from the roughly 2.3 trillion emails Proofpoint processes each year. For UAE and GCC organisations under NESA, CBUAE and ADGM obligations, that combination matters because business email compromise is a fraud problem before it is a malware problem, and fraud rarely carries a payload to scan.

Why Proofpoint for UAE Organisations?
Business email compromise is the dominant loss driver in the region, and it is a fraud problem rather than a malware problem. A well-written invoice redirect carries no attachment, no link and no payload to detonate in a sandbox. Detecting it requires understanding relationships and intent, which is where a dedicated detection stack earns its place over a generalised filter.
Proofpoint's argument against relying on Microsoft 365 native defences alone comes down to two things worth taking seriously. The first is signal: Nexus is trained across Proofpoint's entire customer base, while a tenant-scoped view sees far less. The second is architectural, and it is the one I raise most often with UAE clients. If your mail platform and your mail security are the same vendor, they share a failure domain. A platform-level compromise removes both at once. Regulators reviewing operational resilience tend to ask about exactly that.
The other genuine differentiator is the human risk loop. Proofpoint identifies Very Attacked People from real attack telemetry and feeds those individuals into targeted ZenGuide training, including converting live phishing campaigns into simulations. Training the whole organisation identically has poor returns. Training the twelve people actually under sustained attack is a different proposition, and it is a far easier conversation to have with a board.
